An Innovative Symposium on Age-Related Macular Degeneration

From April 18th to 20th, 2024, the National S.I.S.O. Congress took place in Rome, bringing together ophthalmology experts to discuss the latest advancements in the treatment of several ocular pathologies. One of the highlights of this event was the symposium titled “AMD: New Points of View,” which attracted significant interest, especially due to the participation of three leading figures in retinal research in Italy, who reported an interesting update on age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The symposium featured a presentation by Professor Francesco Viola, who shared recent findings on the nutritional treatment of patients with AMD, emphasizing the importance of dietary supplements in managing this chronic disease. Dr. Luca Ventre unveiled preliminary data from a pioneering study, demonstrating for the first time the vitreous bioavailability of administered nutrients. Finally, Professor Giovanni Scapagnini highlighted the pharmacological benefits of a dietary mix that includes vitamins, mineral salts, and specific components such as citicoline, S-allylcysteine, homotaurine, and lutein.

This symposium proved crucial in informing and updating ophthalmologists on the latest innovations in AMD treatment. It brought together around 200 doctors in the room, while others followed the event remotely via screens provided in different conference areas. The initiative, supported by the URGO Foundation, FB Vision, and the Italian Society of Ophthalmological Sciences (SISO), was widely praised by participants for the quality and relevance of the topics discussed.

The URGO Foundation is committed to fighting AMD due to the disabling and chronic nature of this disease, which increasingly affects elderly people. In Italy, it affects about 2% of the population, with more than 60,000 new cases each year. This commitment reflects the Foundation’s desire to provide concrete and effective solutions to improve the quality of life for patients.
