Patients with venous leg ulcers face considerable suffering and a reduced quality of life. Many of these patients do not receive appropriate treatment, resulting in longer healing times, increased risk of complications and higher treatment costs.
The Leg Ulcer and Compression Days are an international event organized each year by the URGO Foundation to raise awareness and train healthcare professionals in the care and treatment of patients with venous leg ulcers.
Zoom on the trainings organized in Portugal
Recently in Portugal, healthcare professionals attended the “Planet Compression” trainings to better understand compression therapy, a pivotal aspect of wound management. Organized by the URGO Foundation, they were held in November and December 2023 in Aveiro, Porto, and Evora.
These trainings were led by prominent KOLs, including surgeons and nurses, who shared their insights and experiences with the audience.
Dedicated to nurses and doctors, these sessions aimed at highlighting the importance of compression therapy, providing practical insights into its application, optimal timing, and efficacy. Socioeconomic realities of patients with leg ulcers, and cost considerations were also discussed.
In total, 185 health professionals attended these trainings. The success of these events was amplified by the collaboration with key partners, including the National Association of Nurses (Ordem dos Enfermeiros) and the National Association of Pharmaceutics (Ordem dos Farmacêuticos). Additionally, two prestigious universities of nursing, ESSUA and ESSEP, associated with the events.
The feedback received from participants was really positive, with attendees expressing appreciation for the comprehensive content and the diverse perspectives offered by the KOLs. Many highlighted the practical insights gained during the events, which they believed would enhance their practice and decision-making regarding compression therapy.
