The Hidden Challenge of Venous Leg Ulcers in Germany
Venous leg ulcers (VLU) remain a significant challenge in Germany, where approximately 80% of patients do not receive adequate causal treatment. Compression therapy, a cornerstone of effective management, is still underused and often overlooked. This lack of awareness results in delayed healing and unnecessary complications for patients.
Empowering Healthcare Professionals Through Theoretical and Practical Training
For the fourth consecutive year, the URGO Foundation partnered with leading experts in venous leg ulcer treatment to deliver a series of educational events. The program featured three sessions: a webinar for physicians on October 29, a hands-on workshop in Hamburg on November 13, and a webinar for nurses on November 26.
In total, 165 healthcare professionals took part, including nurses, medical assistants, general practitioners, dermatologists, vascular surgeons, angiologists, and phlebologists.
Renowned experts such as Joachim Dissemond, Stephan Eder, Inga Hoffmann-Tischner, Anya Miller, Kerstin Protz, Markus Stücker, and Jürg Traber led the sessions, presenting the latest guidelines and demonstrating their practical application in everyday care.
The Hamburg workshop stood out for its 10 interactive stations, covering all stages of VLU management—from debridement and exudate control to compression application—giving participants the opportunity to test different materials and techniques.

The overall Net Promoter Score across all events reached 74, reflecting strong satisfaction, with participants praising the clarity of presentations, the practical relevance of the content, and the opportunity to interact directly with experts.
Collaborating for Better Standards and Patient Outcomes
The success of these events also lies on the support of organizations such as Fachgesellschaft, Wund Management, and Initiative Chronische Wunden, which certify training programs and promote best practices in wound care. These collaborations underline a shared commitment to advancing medical expertise and improving patient outcomes.
Voices from the Community
“The workshop day is very exciting because it differs from the many online events. You have contact with people and can practice all these things together in a practical way.” shared a participant.
“The Ulcer and Compression Day is an outstanding project with numerous opportunities. It provides a unique chance to engage with healthcare management professionals on a different level. The challenge lies in creating content that not only captures participants’ interest but also offers practical value they can apply directly in their daily work. Our goal is to deliver useful, valuable, and engaging content—concise, relevant, and inspiring.“ — Nicole PIELENSTICKER – Project Manager, URGO Foundation Germany
The URGO Foundation launched this initiative to raise awareness about compression therapy and to provide healthcare professionals with updated knowledge and practical skills. By creating opportunities for networking and exchanging ideas, the Foundation fosters better patient care and encourages collaboration among professionals.
